Welcome to Wyoming's Shire!
Here we raise our own grass and alfalfa hay! Our "Hobbits with Hooves" enjoy the summertime green goods and our bailed hay through the winter months! Along with our own grown hay, we try to stay as natural as possible and feed our Nigerian Dwarf Goats nutritious supplements such as; volcanic ash, free choice vitamins and mineral mix, diatomaceous earth, natural free choice rock salt, and apple cider vinegar. We make our own feed/grain - Our feed/grain consists of oats, alfalfa pellets, flaxseed and kelp. Our Hobbits with Hooves love their breakfast, second breakfast elevenses, Luncheon, Afternoon snacks, Dinner and Suppers! We also enjoy their quality milk and milk products! Our ENTIRE herd of adults are all health tested for not just CAE, but also CL, Johne's, Q fever and Brucellosis. All my goats have nice dispositions, including our bucks. Our small closed herd, we strive to breed for quality, good temperament, and most of all healthy happy "hobbits" with quality tasting milk! You'll be wanting second breakfast too!
My Hobbits with Hooves herd…going on a decade now. Though I haven’t been in Nigerian dwarf goats very long compared to other great breeders out there … I’m proud of how far my little herd has come!
Everyone’s goals and desires are abit different … my goals for my herd has always been health and sustainability. Maintaining the profitability of any dairy animal is a challenge.
Selecting those that have the natural better “maintenance off my land” - keeping good body condition / easy keepers.
“Good temperament” (sometimes overlooked in livestock - I firmly believe that good temperament = lower stress = better health = easier maintenance and longevity)…along with producing “quality tasting milk” with good production yet not overly demanding on their bodies.
I strive for nice “moderate size” udders & teats… not too big and not too small. I like them to be strong but not overly big boned, nor do I like them fragile thin boned… not too tall and not to short…again “moderate”.
I don’t over baby my goats. They need to be “tough” if times get hard… I don’t want to have them falling apart because I’m not pouring expensive dairy hay and grain in front of them 24/7 to keep them up to par. I want a herd that works for me and my natural land resources . I grain them only when I milk. They get free choice minerals, vitamins, salts, garlic and seasonal herbs and veggie produce. Over the last decade I’ve been working on selective breeding for productive "hearty homesteading goats”.
